About Hammerhead Coffee

Hammerhead Coffee derives its name from a record label that the founder, Todd Thorstenson, founded in Champaign 20 years ago called Hammerhead Records.  Between 1993 and 2000, the label promoted and funded recordings for musical artists that toured nationally and the label’s releases were distributed internationally, received radio airplay around the globe, and had great reviews in well-respected magazines such as Alternative Press, College Music Journal (CMJ), and Hit Parader.

On August 17th, 2018, young entrepreneurs and passionate foodies Ryne Thiel, and his fiancé Christine Ahn acquired the Hammerhead Coffee company with the intention to drastically expand and improve the menu.  With the new change of ownership, the menu now includes bubble tea, taiyaki, extremely unique baked delights, Italian sodas, smoothies, breakfast, and lunch.

Hammerhead Coffee features local artists’ music in a continuation of the label’s support of the local arts and, of course, have great coffee, great service, and an aesthetically pleasing and welcoming space. Hammerhead Coffee sets itself apart and remains a true coffee cultural experience for our customers.

Hammerhead Coffee aims to bring an excellent coffee experience to the community while also promoting local businesses.  Many of their pastries and confections come from Pekara Bakery, The Scotchman’s Kitchen and Hopscotch: Cakes & Confections.

In addition to serving food from nearby businesses, the coffee shop also aims to showcase local musicians from the Champaign-Urbana area.

Hammerhead Coffee promises to “have great coffee, great service, and a great welcoming space,” and it definitely lives up to that promise.  Come and grab something to eat, work on that midterm project, and enjoy a $0.80 refill for brewed coffee while in-house.
